Half Term Research on UK Government Cabinet

Everyone was assigned at least 2 cabinet members. Research involved finding out their background, education, financial situation, relationship to David Cameron and/Nick Clegg.

  1. William Hague 49, millionaire, Leader of the Conservative Party 97 -2001. Now British Foreign Secretary..Educated at Bath comprehensive school, then the University of Oxford. Hague was accused of xenophobia and racism. Hague :“Talk about Europe and they call you extreme. Talk about tax and they call you greedy. Talk about crime and they call you reactionary. Talk about immigration and they call you racist; talk about your nation and they call you Little Englanders ... This government thinks Britain would be all right if we had a different people.     Joined his family leather business and became Managing Director. 2007 was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland,2010 was appointed secretary of State for Northern Ireland and was made a Privy Councillor

    Andrew Langley, Conservative and is Councillor of Irthlingbrough,Educated at University of Birmingham,Elected in 2005 then re-elected in 2009 to serve on the Cabinet of the County Council and was made member for “Commercial and Asset Management”

    Wealth- £1.5m co-owns a biotechnology business with her husband, has a constituency home in Dorridge, West Midlands, and a property near Westminster.

  4. Nick Clegg – 44
    Deputy Prime Minister and MP for Sheffield Hallam since 2005, leader of Liberal Democrat Party since 2007. Studied Social Anthropology at Cambridge and took post-grads in Minnesota and Bruges. He is worth 1.8 million from the selling of his Brussels apartment and value of his Sheffield home. Worked as a MEP (1999-2004), part time lecturer, trainee journalist, financial consultant and at the European Commission. Famous scandal is the rise in tuition fees which his party declared they would abolish. Quotes “Nick Clegg, you sold out faster than Muse” – A protester. “Let’s just save time and assume that every time you talk about our policy you get it wrong” – Nick Clegg to David Cameron on final TV debate.

    Michael Gove – 44
    Secretary of State for Education and MP for Surrey Heath since 2005, member of Conservative party. Was previously Shadow Minister for Housing and Planning and Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families. Studied English at Oxford University and was president of debate team, The Oxford Union. Active Labour Supporter in early life. Worth 1 million from the value of both his London and Surrey homes. Also earned more than £70,000 per annum in book writing and journalism before 2010 election. Worked as journalist in newspaper, radio and TV. Appeared in feature film A Feast at Midnight (1995). Caught in expense scandal, claiming £7,000 in furniture (paid back) and £13,000 for moving house. Also in slight sex scandal: shared a bed with 4 other uni students at Oxford, though denies in good humour; accused by the Daily Mail.

Mr Laws’s financial footprint is almost invisible. Despite his fortune estimated at between £1million and £2million. He claimed up to £950 a month for eight years to rent rooms in two properties owned by his partner. The claims could be against parliamentary rules governing MPs’ second home expenses. RESIGNED. Mr Laws’s partner is James Lundie, who is thought to work for a lobbying firm. Educated at St George's College, Surrey. “We (the Liberal party) have been written off more often than a piece of Latin American debt.”

    Eric Pickles, 58, educated at Greenhead Grammar School, West Yorkshire, married. Part of the Conservative, career in Consultant in Employment Practice and Local Government Editor for Conservative News line. His "unfair" spending cuts will have "potentially devastating" consequences. He was Deputy Chairman, joined the Shadow Cabinet as Communities and Local Government Secretary. “If you ever start to worry that Dave's Conservatives are all soft-cheeked trendy toffs, take a moment to admire the girth, the stout cloth, dammit, even the tie-clip of this briny, plain-speaking, subtle, human politician.” “Councils need to make sure they don't sully their reputations by taking decisions behind closed doors to reward chief executives when they should be focusing resources on protecting services.”

  6. George Iain Duncan Smith-57, Leader of the Conservative Party 2001- 2003. Currently the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (MP) constituency Chingford. Founder of the Centre for Social Justice, a centre-right think tank independent of the Conservative Party. Educated at Dunchurch College of Management, the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia and HMS Conway in Anglesey. Duncan Smith owes his apparent wealth to his wife, Betsy. He lives in a £1million house provided by her father, the 5th Baron Cottesloe. Iain worked for GEC-Marconi, a defence company, and Bellwinch, a property company. The ensuing scandal, known as "Betsygate"

    Job: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, First Lord of the Treasury, Minister for the Civil Service and Leader of the Conservative Party. Cameron represents Witney as its Member of Parliament (MP).
    Education: From the age of seven, Cameron was educated at two independent schools: at Heatherdown Preparatory School at Winkfield, in Berkshire, which counted Prince Andrew and Prince Edward among its alumni. Cameron's academic ascent at Heatherdown was so great that he entered its top academic class almost two years early. At the age of thirteen, he went on to Eton College in Berkshire, following his father and elder brother.

    Scandal: David Cameron narrowly avoided being expelled from Eton College when he was involved in the school's worst-ever drugs scandal, it has been revealed. Police were called in and seven pupils were thrown out after boys were caught dealing in and smoking cannabis.
    David Cameron quote: “If you want a modern, compassionate Conservative go for the real thing: that's me. I am it. It's what I think and believe. When I'm under pressure and the the Daily Mail's having a go at me, I'll stick to my guns because that's what I believe in.”

    liam fox DOB 22/9/61,raised in in a council house and attended state school.he graduated from glasgow university with a medicine degree.he had his first contituentcy of woodspring in the 1992 election. in 1999 he was the shadow health secretary and then in 2003 appointed as campaign manger for michael howard. in 2005 hebecame shadow foreign secretary. he aerns around 70k a year and is woth over £1million.

    jeremy hunt, dob 1/11/66, he was raised in surrey and his previous jobs have included being a language teacher injapan and management consultant. and worked in a public relations agency. he was elected his constituecncy in 2005 which was south west surrey.
